Hand & Wrist

The hands and wrists primarily function in fine motor skills such as playing an instrument.  When injured we soon realise they play a part in nearly every activity we perform.

Pain in the hand is most commonly caused by trauma such as a fall, however, osteoarthritis can often begin in a few of the joints making some tasks more uncomfortable.

Should multiple joints be sore and swollen in both hands then an inflammatory cause is quite likely and further investigation should be taken.  Another complaint that is fairly common is carpal tunnel.  This is when the space for the nerves to glide through from the writ into the hand has become very tight and tingling happens in the hands.  This often has multiple contributing factors associated with it including nutritional, inflammatory and structural variance.

Hand & Wrist Related Conditions

  • Fall on outstretched hand "FOOSH" often causes a carpal bone to fracture.  depending on age and severity this requires assessment soon after the incident.

  • Osteoarthritis often occurs in the joints in the thumbs in the older population and can become quite achy doing certain activities.

  • Inflammatory arthritis occurs in multiple joints in both hands and a nutritional assessment would be of significant value in helping to reduce the inflammation.

  • Carpal tunnel is the area the nerves travel through to get to the hand.  Fascial tightness over this area leads to nerve entrapement.

Techniques Frequently Used

  • Myofascial release (the releasing actively or passively of the soft tissues contributing toward the problem).

  • Functional assessment.

  • Nutritional assessment.
